CHAPTER 19

KATE

Andrei was waiting for us at the bottom of the basement steps, tapping the toe of his boot on the stone slabs like he was late for a meeting. He gave us a knowing look before starting up the staircase. ‘Your parshivitsa will get friction burn if you keep this up, Marquis Jack.’

Oh, god, he did not just say that? Jack laughed, but I stared at tips of my blanket dragging along the floor, hoping no one would notice how my cheeks were burning. Jack squeezed my hand, giving me a coy smile.

‘We’re related,’ I whispered to Andrei, still coming to terms with it all. Not an inch of me wanted to be related to Peter, but Andrei? For some strange reason, he was growing on me. Maybe it was how he smirked at me, as if he knew why I liked to have Jack chase me and wanted me to continue exploring those fantasies.

‘I told you everyone here’s related in some way,’ Andrei said with a small smile.

‘I also have a niece,’ I said, remembering the little girl from before. ‘Will Marquis Adam also be in the common room?’

‘Nyet. He has yet to process this new information.’

‘Oh.’

‘How many others know?’ Jack asked as we came to the main hallway, but there was no need for his question. As soon as my feet hit the carpet, a dozen guards stepped away from their positions along the wall and started following us, past the Marquises – who looked at me with the same confusion I’d struggled with earlier – towards Peter, who was leaning against the wall by the front door.

My grip on Jack’s hand tightened so much he let out a muffled groan, but Peter didn’t come for me. He didn’t even say anything, only smiled. His smile reminded me that he saw me as just a bug to add to his collection, and I tore my eyes away, fixing them on the back of Andrei’s head as he took us into the common room.

Theo stood by the fireplace with Nathan, the only people in the room. When he saw me entering, Nathan said something to him in Russian and went to the window. Theo’s smile was gentle, almost cautious, as I approached him.

This was my half-brother? Though I could barely remember meeting Peter as a child, it seemed he had damaged Theo as much as he had harmed me. It made me want to wrap my arms around this man and shield him from the world – and himself.

‘What did you take earlier?’ When Theo feigned innocence, I rolled my eyes. ‘Don’t try to fool me.’

‘Ritalin.’

‘I see.’ I narrowed my eyes at Jack. ‘Don’t give him any more.’

Jack held his hands up. ‘I won’t.’

Theo dipped his head, and the dimples in his cheeks softened his features further. ‘You’re a curious one. Do you know that?’

‘I prefer curious to little freak.’

‘You’re not a freak.’

‘And you’re not a mudak.’

He grinned. ‘I still can’t believe you called Jack that.’

‘I called him an arrogant arse the first time I met him.
